Introducing Barbie

Ever heard of a girl called Barbara Millicent Roberts? She has been around for over 50 years and in that time, has had over 40 pets and  more then 100 jobs! I am talking about the famous Barbie doll. Did you know that two barbie dolls are sold every second. I bet you didn't know that Barbie was based on a German adult doll called  Bild Lilli (see below).

This doll was based on a sexy cartoon character, published in a German news paper in 1952. This sexy adult doll was the predecessor of our modern barbie doll.

Is it right that so many children spend hours playing with barbie dolls? She has become a cultural icon. I believe that barbie is not a good role model for young girls. Her unrealistic proportions, gives girls a warped perception of beauty from a very young age. If barbie was real, she would probably not be able to menstruate as she is too thin! This is definitely not a healthy image for young girls to be around and idolize.

My argument is on why barbie should be taken off shelves.

  1. Banned is quite a strong term to use, especially since you have mentioned it is a cultural icon. Although I do agree with you on the point that barbie is an unnatural aspiration figure for girls and women, especially in this age we live in.

  3. Considering the history of Barbie, I wonder why parents still buy them for their children. As you have stated, Barbie is a cultural icon. I myself, grew up with many Barbies. I agree that it gives very young girls a body image to aspire to which is not exactly healthy. However, not all girls grow up that way. Some end up using Barbie as a research assistant. Mostly in relation to pyrotechnics.

  4. Wow, I never knew a lot of this. :o! Nice subject choice. I saw an article about this woman recently, she's a Ukrainian model, Valeria Lukyanova, I believe, who's had a tonne of cosmetic surgery, which apparently includes having some of her floating ribs removed to look like a live Barbie.

Annnd plus she knows her way around photoshop. It's sad, because she was beautiful in the first place, so I guess you'd have a point in saying that it sets an unrealistic benchmark for young girls, and even women a like. From a few things I've read and seen lately, it seems like a new trend in wanting to look like a "doll" is finding it's way to the internet. Another is Venus Palermo, but she's not really like barbie. Still though, some girls grow up idolising bits of plastic (and porcelain), and then some idolise those who have tried to be them. It's sad :(

    2. It really is sad isn't it! These girls should know that they are beautiful the way they are.

    1. wow, I looked that up...is that real? That's so wrong! I was thinking about doing my topic on the bad outcomes of children's beauty contests, this may have been helpful for that argument. I really hope this isn't real...

  6. Honestly I'm not a babie person but I really enjoy watching babies movies I'm not sure if this episode related to the babie doll :). Before I didn't know any history of this but now I learn something from you here in your blog. Be honest with you I prefer to buy a teddy bear instead of buy the babie doll, but people have different taste of thing, so I'm going to judge who like doll and who don't I just pointed out my own personal feelings :). Apart from this I looking forward to read more of your blog..Well done

  8. I used to play with Barbies a lot as a young girl and was a huge fan, I never knew these things about the brand and the doll. It's great that you did this because it made me change my mind about Barbie's so that means you wrote an excellent blog :)
